The 31st Annual Danville-Pittsylvania County Fair came alive this weekend with a classic roster of carnival rides and fare, including a crazy concoction – pickle pizza – joining the dining experience halfway through.
The fair started on Friday and will continue next Saturday.
Following a fatal shooting last year, additional security measures are planned, organizers announced on Facebook. Extra precautions include extra security, more cameras, bag checks and metal detector screenings before entering the gate.
“Our goal is to keep things running as quickly and efficiently as possible, but you may want to allow a little extra time to get in the door, especially if you’re arriving at a busy time,” said the message on social networks. “As a reminder, there are absolutely no weapons allowed on Fairgrounds property.”

Among the more unique dishes will be the pickle pizza, which will make its debut at this year’s fair.
“It’s no surprise that customers in Danville County Pittsylvania love to eat,” Strates Shows spokesperson Marty Biniasz wrote in a press release.
Dealers Doug and Laurie Dills — a couple with an appropriate last name — came up with the pickle pizza creation. It’s made with hand-mixed dough, a special dill vinaigrette sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese and dill seasoning, according to a press release.
Then, layered on top are thin slices of bright green pickles.
“What sets Strates Shows Midway Food apart is the quality of the ingredients used and the freshness of the final product served to the fairgoer,” Biniasz said. “Most of the dishes on the menu are made to order in front of the customer. In addition, due to the volume of products sold, new batches are always in production. »
In addition to pizza, other carnival classics will be on the menu, including corn dogs, Italian sausages with peppers and onions, funnel cakes and fried Oreos.
The Strates Shows, a 99-year-old family-owned and operated outdoor carnival and entertainment company, is headquartered in Orlando, Fla., according to a news release.
The Dream Wheel ranked as the 7th most popular ride at the Danville-Pittsylvania County Fair last year.

The company recently listed its top 10 rides based on ticket scans from last year’s Danville-Pittsylvania County Fair.
At No. 10 is Zero Gravity, where patrons stand against the wall as the ride begins to spin at breakneck speeds. As the ride rotates vertically, g-forces come into play and pin the riders in place. At #9, The Wacky Worm, known as the perfect “first coaster” for young riders, is a colorful caterpillar.
Jumbo’s Flying Elephants placed eighth. For #7, the Dream Wheel flaunts a mid-ride panoramic view 72 feet above the ground while rolling in a family-sized gondola.
The Claw ranked sixth among the most popular rides at the Danville-Pittsylvania County Fair last year.

To experience the ultimate sensation of speed, The Claw comes in at No. 6. The ever-famous Merry-Go-Round, a carousel built by the legendary Allan Herschell Company, is an age-old classic at Now. 5.
A driver’s license is not required for tour #4 with the scooters/bumper cars.
At #3, the Sky Flyer is a 98-foot-tall vertical swing that can be seen “dancing in the sky.” As 24 runners slowly climb to the top, the tower begins to spin and centrifugal force kicks in.
Music, lights and sounds keep the action spinning on Muzik Express Route #2.
At the top of the list of favorite rides is the giant wheel, known as the “king of the middle lane”. At 105 feet tall, it towers over the fairgrounds and surrounding community.
